Welcome to the Tour of Blocks!
Wooo Hooo! So glad to see you on this Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Blog Tour! What an honor to be included among such a talented group of designers.
When I started designing my block for Volume 6, I wanted to make a block that could read, “fall” but that could also be kept up year ‘round. I went through a few ideas and came up with Acorns Away. This is a really simple applique block, it only has five pieces so you can make it up in a jiffy.
As I started my designing process I began to sketch out a few ideas….
Once I settled on the final design it was a matter of choosing the right fabrics to make it sing. As a designer, I find this to be the hardest part because I am dealing with a line drawing and no pattern cover for guidance. I pulled lots of fabrics, browns, golds, greens, but couldn’t really “see” it yet until I unearthed a couple of pieces with some gold accents added in. In my opinion, more is more and I always love a little extra something to catch your eye when designing my patterns.
Next began the process of deciding on a background color and, after auditioning a few choices, I decided to go with black to give it a little drama.
I also love to add a little extra accent detail with a flange of a contrasting color. I often add a flange to my quilts instead of an inner border. This little strip of fabric not only adds that extra pop of color but it also allows me to begin my free-motion quilting by lifting it up and beginning and ending my stitching underneath it. This little trick makes it more difficult for anyone to find where I begin and end my stitches.
What fun you can have making these simple blocks into a small three block wallhanging for a skinny wall in your home which needs just the right decorative touch.
Or make five blocks of the acorn and four blocks of the leaf design to make a bigger wallhanging.
You could make the blocks all the same, or kick it up a little by changing the colors of the leaves.
I hope you will give this block a try, don’t be afraid of the “a” word, you can applique this with any method, by machine using fusible web and a blanket or satin stitch, by hand, or even raw edge applique.
To win a copy of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Volume 6 or one of my patterns, simply go to my website, http://www.HissyfitzDesigns.com, check out my patterns, and then come back here and leave a comment as to which of my patterns you would like to win. Two winners will be chosen at random. If you have a Facebook account, I’d really appreciate it if you would “Like” me.
Continue to enjoy the rest of the Blog Tour by going to the Quiltmaker’s Blog Quilty Pleasures each day of the tour, November 5-9. You’ll have such fun trying to decide which project you want to try next!
Enjoy!
That would make a great mini quilt to display in autumn.
Me and my peeps!! I like them all, but this one the most!
What a lovely way to finish your block– the variety really suits it! Congratulations!

I’m the sort who MUST have applique for times when I am away from home. This block is fantastic! I can’t wait to buy the magazine so I can get started creating something from your wonderful idea.
Sandy, first let me say that I love the leaf part of your Volume 6 block “Acorns Away”. This looks like an applique that I could tackle. Your patterns are all light and funny. I especially like Jiggity-Jig, the cute Mouse, and Frog Days of Summer. I’d be happy with any of them. Thanks for an opportunity to win. Have fun today! Sandi
Jiggity Jig is so fun. I also love Flamingo Frolic. You pick – it is too hard for me!
Love your little hisssies.
Hello! Your Acorns Away block is one of my faves in the new magazine. I especially like the little stripey border around the acorn. It makes it extra jazzy. I’m just stopping by to say “hello”. Don’t enter me in the giveaway, I’m on the tour, too. Have a super day!
Great patterns, my favorite being the giraffes in My Favorite Earrings. I just love your acorn block. Nice idea about the flange instead of an inner border. I want to try that soon.
Maybe it is because I saw my first snowflakes of the year yesterday, but I hink my favorite pattern would be Fill ‘er Up Santa. Love the flange tip, too!! Thanks for the inspiration and for the chance to win!
You have many nice patterns, hard to choose. Well, I love cats, so I think my choise will have to be…….Sweety Cats!!!! So cool, I love it 🙂

p.s. “Liked” you on FB!
I loved the sweety cats! But I find them a bit difficult for a beginner like me
So hard to choose! Toss-up between ‘Snowmen–Some Assembly Required’ and ‘My Favorite Earrings’. Love them both!
Love this block, wouldn’t it be great made up in wools? Went to your website, ooohh love “Me and My Peeps” and “Jiggety Jig”…..would be toss up, but I’m really leaning toward “Me and My Peeps” oooh, temptation…..

It’s a toss-up between Fill ‘er Up Santa and Me and My Peeps. However, I like them all including you acorn. I’m adding your blog to my Favorites and I also “liked” you on FB.
Your patterns are absolutely delightful and intimidating to me as a novice appliquer. If I chose a pattern, it would have to be Sweety Cat in memory of my cat of 14 years. The little Santa Mouse reminds me of her as well as she would often hide under rugs with just her eyes peeking out. Thanks for your giveaway.
I like your pattern Me and my peeps. BUT I LOVE ACORNS… your block is the best, congrats on getting into the book. I WANT ONE!
Santa Mouse, definitely! He is just soooo cute!
I love your block! Fall is my favorite season! My favorite pattern is Snowmen – Some Assembly Required. Thanks for the giveaway!
I really like your Stitchin Addiction pattern. It would be such a fun one to make.
Thanks for the great tip about starting and stopping the free motion quilting under the colorful flange! — Why didn’t I think of that?! I like all of your patterns, but especially the Gorgeous Gourds. Fall is one of my favorite times of year (with Spring), so I expect to make the acorn block.
quiltschon@att.net
My favorite is the little block Stitch. I’d love to have that in my sewin room. Love you acorn! I’m thinking it would be a darling block to use as a lable on any type of “fall” quilt, even Halloween would be ok.
Your patterns are adorable. I like Stitchin’ Addiction and Sweety Cats.
I love your owl block designs and, of course, Stitchin’ Addiction.
Picking a favorite is definitely a hard decision. As I scrolled down the webpage, it was “oh, Iike this one”, and “this one too”, and so forth. Narrowed it down to “Gorgeous Gourds” and “My Favorite Earrings”. Final decision: The giraffes won.
You have such cute designs! I would love to see Stitch as part of a tote bag to carry my projects in.
Being that I’m a cat person – and I love dogs too…so I think Sweety Cat
Love your Sweety Cat pattern. Thanks for sharing your block & thanks for the chance to win.
Oops – hit reply before I was done – duh – thank you for the opportunity to win!
I love your acorn block and how you showed the design process. I just became a follower on Facebook and of your site. I want to make a lot your designs. They are so whimsical. Jiggidity Jig would be a fun one to make.

I love the whimsy of Jiggity-Jig.Thanks for sharing!
I love your patterns but I would choose Frog Days of Summer if I won!!
Where to begin. Although I love teapots and cats, I have to go with My Favorite Earrings for a pattern that I would love to make. Giraffes are so elegant. I just love your acorn block. It’s great.
I think Me and My Peeps is so sweet; I fastened onto it the minute I saw it.
Love the block and fabric is beautiful!!
My Favorite Earrings…..so cute!

I just love all of your patterns!! My Momma would love My favorite earrings ! I am bookmarking , so I can come back and order a few.
Darling patterns, and hard to choose just one. But, I guess I would pick Stitchin Addiction, but my first one to try will definitely be Acorns Away.
Beautiful acorn!!
Only one favorite? There are many I love. This time I chose My and my peeps.
It’s a toss up between Stitching Addiction for me, and Action Jackson to make for my little boys! A Home For All Seasons would be fun too!
This is a great block–I love fall colors and my favorite thing is to drive up in the mountains in the autumn with the mountainsides ablaze with color between the dark green pines, cedars, and sagebrush.
Great block! The black background gives it such a dramatic look.
Thanks for sharing the idea of the flang and your quilting starting under it. I really like your acorn block. I checked your patterns and I’m a lover of “Snowmen”. It is really cute. Thanks.
Me and my peeps! I love it. I also love the acorn!

I love Me and My Peeps. As soon as your page came up and I saw that I just gasped. I love birds so that really caught my eye. Thanks for the chance to win.
Wow, so hard! The owls were my first choice, and then the Fall wall hanging, and then the snowmen (some assembly required). And since I am perpetually drawn to snowmen, I guess I’d stick with that as my final choice. I like how all your designs are so different and so fun!
Stitchin Addiction is my choice because I am addicted to quilting and everything about quilts.
Cute acorn! Jiggity Jig is soooo cute! Thanks for the giveaway.
Pick one, are you kidding… Me and My Peeps…Frog Dayz…Christmas Mouse.. Oh I will go like you on facebook and consider it a LOVE not a like!

I like the stitchen addiction pattern the best.
The Acorns are perfect for my friend who is a member of my home town’s “Nut Club” a local service organization, and I really like the gourds. But, if I really had to chose one, I think I’d pick the stockings. We desperately need new stockings at our house and I’ve been hoping to run across a nice pattern. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoyed seeing all your patterns. Stitch in’ Addiction is my favorite. Love your acorn block and quilt.
Gorgeous gourds is my favorite pattern on your website. Do also like the Mouse under the santa cap. Cute! I’d love to try your acorn block in wool. Can’t wait to get the magazine!

Such a cute block – I love the flexibility of it and especially love the multi-colored leaves! I’ve started making wall hangings for each of the seasons & holidays. I see this one in my future! Thanks for the give-a-way! Can’t choose – so may great patterns – Love the Santa Mouse (I blog under Quiltmouse), but also like the featherweight/Stitchn Addiction and then the Holiday Banners are great! I’d be happy with any one of them!

I also love the acorn and the leaves. I think it makes a beautiful addition to the fall lineup.
Absolutely love your acorn block. Gorgeous with the leaves added to make a quilt. This was the first time I have been to your website and it really brought a smile to my face. Such cute designs who can decide on one. I like the new Jiggity Jig as well as crusin. They are very original. Thanks for the chance to win.
Sandy ~ Your acorn block is wonderful. If my Mom were still alive she would love a quilt using your block.
Choosing just one of your patterns as a favorite is very hard. I just adore the Little Hissies Santa Mouse because it reminds me of a picture my husband took with my gorgeous Ragdoll cat a few years ago when he chose to think the Santa Hat we’d layed on the sofa while decorating the Christmas tree surely had been put there for him to use as a pillow. But, I need to make a quilt for my 8 month (will be 9 months in about 5 days) old Granddaughter so I’d choose Cutie Patootie.
I also have a 1 yr old Grandson that I need to make a quilt for and the Action Jackson quilt would be perfect for him, but Cutie Patootie first since she lives with us.
Thank you so much for the chance to not only win a copy of the magazine but one of your patterns as well. That’s super nice of you.
Hard to pick one, but since I love fall and applique, I would pick your beautiful gourds pattern.
I love your acorn pattern and my favorite pattern of yours will have to be Action Jackson… that is a really cute pattern for a little boy..
This acorn block would be a great accompaniment to the Gorgeous Gourds pattern, which is the one I would love to win if you draw my name!!

My favourite pattern is Me and My Peeps – so cute. Three of your acorn blocks makes a great fall wallhanging!
Wonderful block, great for this time of year! I think I would choose the Giraffe pattern.I have a great friend who loves them. Thanks!
I love your block! Fall is my favorite season of the year. I really like the mulitcolored leaf version. I love the quilts on your website too, so much fun! Hard to pick one but I’m also

Jiggity-Jig is my favorite and right now that could be as I sit here in FL with the ocean waves and enjoying the birds each morning. Your acorn blocks are awesome. I have the one piece of fabric you used on the lid. Reminded me of Indian corn kernels.
Hard to choose….but, though “Me and My Peeps” calls me, I would choose “Tweet” (because of the flower!).
Fill ‘er up Santa has to be the coolest quilted stocking I’ve seen. I’d love to win that pattern.

Jiggity-Jig is such a fun pattern.
